THE STERLING COUNTY HISTORICAL COMMISSION
June 13, 2022, the Commissioners Court of Sterling County appointed the following as members
of the Sterling County Historical Commission, beginning a two year appointment:
Judie Williams, Oscar Galaviz, Jack Clark, Linda Horwood, Heath Hughes, Philip Glass, Debbie Foster,
Shari Copeland and LeRuth Stewart.
THE STERLING COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, INC.
In 1990, The Sterling County Historical Society, Inc. was created as a nonprofit corporation with
the purpose to perform charitable activities within the meaning of Internal Revenue Code Section
501(c)(3) and Texas Tax Code Section 11.18(c)(1). The Corporation is organized to protect and preserve
historical sites and landmarks within Sterling County, Texas and to preserve the heritage which created
them. The Board of Directors serving currently: LeRuth Stewart, Shari Copeland, Pam Radde and Linda
Horwood.
The nonprofit corporation organized a Centennial Celebration for the county’s 100th birthday in
1991 and provided donations for the renovation of the historic railroad depot for Sterling County Senior
Citizens.
Milling Around Sterling County (1976) Reprint – The original historical book of Sterling County,
published in 1976 and reprinted in 2022. 382 pages of the early history of Sterling County including The
Raw Frontier becomes Civilized, The History of Transportation, Tall Tales and Reminiscences, Family
Histories, Memorials and Dedications. Available for $72.00 (tax included)
Milling Around Sterling County Volume II (2023) – Volume II contains 725 pages of color
photographs and designs, including historical content from 1976 to 2023. Forward contributed by
Patrick Dearen, a Sterling native and famous author of several literary works. Volume II features various
aspects of our county such as: Local Government, Agriculture, Industry/Business, Education, Medical,
Churches, Cemeteries, Clubs/Organizations, Military/Veterans, Celebrations, Family Histories and
Memorials/Dedications. Available for $72.00 (tax included)
